Thousands of trekkers converged on Bowen, North Queensland, this week to walk one kilometre offshore to North Head Island lighthouse during rare ultra-low winter tides. The 1866-built lighthouse remains accessible for only five days yearly due to extreme tidal variations, with the final opportunity this year on August 11 and 12.
