Researchers working on artificial placentas for premature babies

Perth researchers are developing artificial placentas to help extremely premature babies born at 22-23 weeks gestation. Professor Matt Kemp at the Women and Infants Research Foundation leads the project, which uses a device powered by the fetus's own heart to provide nutrients and oxygen via the umbilical.
