'Like an ambush': Gove Peninsula elder rejects new land council plan

Gumatj elder Djawa Yunupiŋu announced a new Aboriginal land council at Garma Festival yesterday, marking the first in the Northern Territory in 35 years. Rirratjiŋu clan leader Wanyubi Marika rejected the plan, saying he felt "ambushed" by lack of consultation and preferred remaining with the Northern Land Council. The breakaway Dilak Land Council would distribute mining royalties from northeast Arnhem.
