Australia raises spirits excise tax, pushing alcohol duties to world's third-highest rate

Australia's government imposed its 79th alcohol tax increase in 40 years, raising excise on spirits from nearly $108 to just over $110 per litre effective Monday. Small distillery Starward will pay an additional $112,000 annually on top of existing $6 million tax obligations. Australian brewers and distillers now face the world's third-highest tax rate on alcohol.
